Bong Buying Guide: Beakers, Recyclers and Percolators Explained

A good piece of glass is something you use almost every day, and the right one makes every session smoother and more enjoyable. If you are shopping for your first bong, or upgrading from an old one, this guide explains the main styles in plain language.

Why glass?

Glass does not change the flavor, it is easy to clean, and it lets you see exactly what is going on inside. Many quality pieces are made from borosilicate glass, the same heat-resistant glass used in lab equipment and kitchenware, which handles temperature changes well.

The main bong styles

Beaker bongs

A beaker has a wide, flared base that sits steady on a table and holds plenty of water. It is a classic for a reason: stable, simple and smooth. Our Metallic Red & Gold Beaker and Pink Beaker Tree Perc are two eye-catching examples.

Bubble base and straight tubes

Zong bongs

Recyclers

What is a percolator?

A percolator, or “perc,” is a piece of glass inside the bong that breaks the smoke into smaller bubbles as it passes through the water. More bubbles mean more contact with water, which many people find makes each hit smoother. Common types include:

• Tree percs: several thin arms that each split the smoke.
• Showerhead percs: a disc with slits that spreads the bubbles evenly.
• Stacked percs: two or three stages for extra filtration, like our Tall Amber Triple Perc and Green Accent Double Tree Perc.

How to choose the right size

• Small to mid-size (8–12 inches): easy to handle, store and clean.
• Tall pieces (14 inches and up): more room for percolators and a cooler draw. Great centerpieces.

What to look for in person

• Clean joints where the bowl fits snugly.
• Even glass without thin spots or bubbles in the walls.
• A style you love. You will see it every day.
