How to Clean a Bong and Hookah (and Keep Them Looking New)

Glass hand pipes in a display case

Clean glass tastes better, looks better and lasts longer. The good news is that cleaning a bong or hookah takes only a few minutes and a few simple supplies. Here is how to do it.

Why regular cleaning matters

  • Better flavor. Fresh water and clean glass mean every session tastes the way it should.
  • Smoother draw. Buildup can block percolators and joints.
  • A piece that looks new. Clear glass shows off the craftsmanship you paid for.
  • Longer life. Gentle, regular care beats aggressive scrubbing later.

What you need

  • Isopropyl alcohol (91% or higher works best)
  • Coarse salt
  • Resealable bags for small parts
  • Pipe cleaners and a soft brush
  • Rubber stoppers or caps (optional)
  • Warm water

How to clean a bong

1. Empty and rinse

Pour out the old water and rinse the piece with warm water. Remove the bowl and downstem.

2. Soak the small parts

Put the bowl and downstem in a resealable bag with alcohol and a spoonful of salt. Shake and let them soak.

3. Shake the main piece

Pour alcohol and salt into the bong, cover the openings and shake gently. The salt scrubs while the alcohol dissolves residue. For tricky percolators, like the ones in our triple perc, let it sit for a few minutes, then shake again.

4. Rinse thoroughly

Rinse everything with warm water until no smell of alcohol remains. Let it air-dry completely.

Borosilicate glass handles temperature changes well, but avoid pouring boiling water into cold glass.

How to clean a hookah

  1. Base: rinse with warm water after every session. Use a long brush for the inside.
  2. Stem: run warm water through it and scrub with a stem brush.
  3. Bowl: rinse clay bowls with water only, no soap, and let them dry fully.
  4. Hose: washable hoses can be rinsed. Leather or traditional hoses should not be washed. Let air flow through them to dry.
